For more than 40 years, dental implants have helped patients that have damaged or missing teeth. Nowadays, getting a dental implant is extremely common, and remains one of the best advancements in dental technology in recent years.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small piece of composite metal that is inserted below your gumline and into the bone, and used to stabilize dental work, typically crowns, bridges and dentures. Since it is secured into the bone, it is long-lasting and sturdy.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

The most obvious benefit of a dental implant is that your crown (or bridge) is secured into the bone, and so it is sturdy and does not shift. There is therefore less maintenance and inconvenience. Dental implants are the closest thing to a permanent solution for missing teeth!

One additional benefit to dental implants is that since the dental implant is secured into the bone, it helps to prevent the erosion of bone that otherwise occurs when teeth are missing. The truth is, if you have missing teeth, bone erosion is a serious risk! Dental implants help prevent this from happening, and is one of the best ways to ensure a healthy smile for years.

What about dental implants and dentures?

Traditionally, dentures simply sit on the gums and are held in place with denture paste. The issue with this method is that the dentures then routinely slip out of place.

However, by placing a few dental implants, we can then lock the dentures into place, securing them in the mouth! They are still easy to insert and remove, but there is no risk of them slipping out of place unintentionally. They also feel much more secure in the mouth, which helps with eating and talking.
